 | Beautiful love story- impressive turn by Michelle Yeoh | | Take 2 warriors, 1 aristocrat, throw in a stolen sword called the "Green Destiny" , add plenty of action, a dash of hidden love and a bit of forbidden love, and you've got yourself an Oscar-winning film by director Ang Lee. This film has it all! Master Li Wu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) has asked fellow warrior Shu Lien (the amazing Michelle Yeoh) to deliver is beloved sword (the "Green Destiny") to a friend as a present, signifying that his fighting days are over- much to Shu Lien's approval. Perhaps now he'll finally confess his love for her and the two can settle down. But someone else interrupts their plans. After the sword is delivered, a thief steals the sword (it is the fight scenes between Shu Lien and the thief that are among the best). Enter the Governor and his daughter (Zhang Ziyi), who dreams of escaping her arranged marriage and prefers to become a warrior instead. She, too, has a few secrets up her elegant sleeves, as does her governess (Pei-Pei Cheng). The best thing about this movie is the way Ang Lee pulls so many stories together, yet they all intertwine perfectly without disruption or confusion. The cinematography is breathtaking. I've read many people who had a hard time buying the fact that these warriors can fly. I'm not sure if it's meant to be a "mind over matter" thing- personally, I think it's more for cinematic drama than anything else. I didn't give it a second thought- I was too busy getting wrapped up in this wonderful tale. If you're into hard-core martial arts, this movie probably has too much storyline and dialogue for you. If, however, you're looking for a foreign film that well earned it's 4 Oscar awards, you've found it! |
| Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - | | A Masterpiece | | Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is simply a masterpiece. A brilliant film with great performances by its stars, Michelle Yeoh, Chow yun fat, and especially Zhang Ziyi. Director Ang Lee along with his choreographer tell this epic story in a stunning and creative visual way that makes this film one of the greatest ever made. The action scenes in this film are jaw dropping, and are unmatched by any action film ever made. Along with the action, is a great story and great characters that reflect influences from Lord of the Rings, and parallel the Jedi of the Star Wars trilogy, but remain consistent with the eastern culture and philosophy which permeates throughout the story. In fact, the main characters, especially Jen, portrayed by the talented Zhang Ziyi , seem to question that philosophy and culture throughout the film, almost rebelling against it. This is foreshadowed in the beginning of the film when Yun-fat's character describes how his meditation leads him to a place of sorrow instead of enlightenment. In a later scene, Yeoh 's character questions the buddhist teaching of Fat's character in relation to their suppressed love, pointing out the touch of her hand is real, not an illusion, even though it is of this world. However it is also the discipline of this eastern spirituality that gives these knights their power. the main character Jen, abuses this power, along with the power given to her when she posesses the Green Destiny, a magical and powerful sword, owned by the wizard -like, or jedi- like, character portrayed by Chow Yun-Fat. The Green Destiny, much like the ring of power in lord of the rings, or the force in Star Wars, becomes a power that threatens to consume Jen. Throughout the film , Jen rebels against the traditions of the easten culture and philosophy. Even during the action scenes, as Chow Yun-Fat's character scolds her, she responds by telling him to stop talking like a monk and fight. Her rebellion is also reflected in her love for a barbarian that lives in the desert. Jen's rebellion is an extreme one, however, that leads to such deep despair, that it leaves the viewer to question if even the true love she found in the desert can save her. This movie has everything one wants in an epic, great story, acting, cinematography, directing, score. This film should win an Oscar for Best Picture... Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is truly a great film. |
| - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon | | Simply Stunning | | To all the naysayers who commented about "people not being able to fly like that", did you not realize this was a Chinese fantasy? Director Ang Lee had made a masterpiece combining the most graceful form of martial arts with drama, cinematography, score and wonderful acting on screen. This movie ranks along side the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars as my top favorite epics, all of which display a lot of heart and emotion by the characters portrayed. I had not seen this movie when it went up against Gladiator for Best Picture. Now, looking back, I think this movie was far more superior in quality and deserved that title Oscar. I'll admit I'm biased because I'm half Asian, and I understand the underlying social tensions and suppressions the characters were feeling; yet, despite it all, they upheld themselves with diginity. In the end, each realized that the true lesson in life was to be true to oneself. How romantic and bitterweet. This is a must-see film. Don't dismiss it because you're not a fan of Kung-Fu. It's much more than that. It's absolutely brilliant! |
